How to Correctly Measure Kitchen Doors and Drawer Fronts

16 May 2025
Are you planning to purchase new doors to renovate your kitchen but aren't sure about taking measurements? This short guide will provide all the necessary instructions to obtain precise measurements and ensure a perfect result.

What you'll need:
  • Measuring tape
  • Paper and pen to note down measurements

1. Replacing Existing Doors
Always measure the back of the door, not the front
This step is crucial because the back of the door always has a completely flat surface, while the front might have curved profiles, raised decorations, or rounded corners that would alter the measurements.

Measure the width and height with millimeter precision
The correct measurement of the door or drawer front corresponds to the cabinet frame measurement minus 3 mm, both in height and width.
e.g.: A door for a 600 mm (60 cm) wide base cabinet will have a width of 597 mm.

2. Measuring Doors Based on Kitchen Structures
If you have a new kitchen or if the doors of your old kitchen are too damaged to be measured, use this method to calculate the exact measurement of your doors.

Measure the cabinet frame with precision
Record the width and height of the structure in millimeters.
e.g., 60 cm = 600 mm

Calculate the door dimensions
To determine the correct door measurements, subtract 3 mm from both the height and width of the cabinet frame.
e.g.: For a cabinet frame of H 720 x 600 mm, the door will measure 717 x 597 mm.

Why 3 mm?
The 3 mm gap is necessary to ensure that the door or drawer front opens and closes smoothly, without colliding with nearby fronts and getting damaged.
This is standard practice, but your doors might have different measurements and, consequently, the space between them is different.
Here's what you can do:
  • You can decide to take the measurements of the cabinet frames and subtract 3 mm from each measurement;
  • Decide to take the exact measurements of your doors, checking that the spaces between them are suitable for opening the fronts and aren't too wide.
